First visit today, we started off large with a tour of the Vancouver campus of the University of British Columbia. It should be noted that the campus of this university founded in 1908 is immense. It is composed of 473 buildings and a multitude of green space!

We were welcomed by Joady Swiff and Ken Zuidema with muffins and coffee. They gave us a brief presentation on the particularities of UBC and especially the Faculty of Applied Sciences. The faculty offers courses in engineering, architecture, management and nursing. The programs are twinned in this way to create healthier, more humane cities. It is the only university in Canada where biomedical engineering students will be called upon to work collaboratively with medical students. They have six engineering departments:

  • Mechanical
  • Civil
  • Electric
  • Materials
  • Miniers

Like ÉTS, the university offers the co-op program for all bachelor’s degrees.

Afterwards, we had several laboratory visits. The first was Dr. K.’s control engineering laboratory. Ryozo Negamune where three students presented their research project. One of them was interested in sensors that allow robots to adapt to the environment around him and stay in balance. Another student is working on an intelligent solar energy system that could save up to 30% of the energy used to heat water in homes. The last one presented his research on fluid mechanics in a wind farm and some ways to optimize their layout.

Afterwards, we visited a mechanical engineering laboratory with Mr. M. B. Tugce Tuysuz. The student creates computer models to calculate vibration during the manufacture of machined parts. This research was carried out in collaboration with local industries and allowed them to save thousands of dollars in terms of machine adjustment and time.

We ended up with the materials engineering department with Dr. M. K. K. K. Warren Poole and the Mechatronic Molecular Laboratory at Dr. Poole John Madden.

This visit was greatly enriching and motivating! The visit covered several fields of study, so we all enjoyed it! It’s a good start to the mission! 🙂

See you soon !
